On Friday I participated in a meeting with Mark Schapiro, author of Carbon Shock. Among the subjects Schapiro raised with our group is the increased scrutiny the insurance industry is giving to the impacts of climate change. Unlike the factors politicians use regarding the issue of climate change, insurers use math and math to make their determinations. When the numbers reveal heightened risk they act by raising rates to insure against losses. Flood, fire and other growing risks expressed in insurance rates may do as much or more than politicians to create a serious human response to climate change.
